LG C900 with QWERTY muscle leaks next, WP7 ticks inside

Remember those two LGs leaked yesterday? Here is another one. The Windows Phone 7 running LG C900 is the QWERTY brother of E900 offering the same power, but on a smaller screen.

LG C900
LG C900 is rumored to pack a 1GHz QSD8650 Snapdragon core, which is supposed to be the same as the E900's one. The rest of the known specs are a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, all-round connectivity, 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB port. And one more thing, the device should be heavy because its body is seriously all-metal.

Palm reveals key webOS 2.0 features, beta now available

Palm's webOS 2.0 is coming by the end of the year but today's big news is that the first webOS 2.0 beta has just been released. Sadly, it's only made been available for developers. They are getting the webOS 2.0 SDK beta as well. At least we get a sneak peek at some key webOS 2.0 features - there's no word (or rumor) of a new WebOS device just yet.
One of the major advantages of the webOS over its rivals is the way it deals with multiple apps running at the same time. Thanks to the webOS cards, multi-tasking is easy and fun. But as of version 2.0 the cards are taken to a whole new level with Stacks. Now, related cards are grouped together in stacks so it's easier to move between multiple simultaneously running apps.
Another news brought by the webOS 2.0 is the Exhibition feature. With its help the device transforms into a portable entertainment and information center once it's docked on the Palm Touchstone Charging Dock.
Thanks to the Node.js runtime environment support, which is built into the new webOS 2.0, developer will be able to create not only webOS applications but JavaScript web apps that will run as the native ones. The webOS 2.0 will also bring some new HTML5 features and enhancements.
Palm will also encourage developers to release more webOS compatible apps by helping them seamlessly port apps from other platforms to the webOS.
Another new features, the Universal Search, is not simply a search tool anymore. Instead it's renamed to Just Type and it will allow for Quick Actions, which let you quickly write an email or a text message, update your status or search the Internet. And what's more important, you won't have to open a new app to do any of those - you can do it straight from the screen - just type!
Synergy, another webOS feature that we like, is expected to get even better.
So, the webOS lives on. HP kept its word and continues the hard work on the webOS even after the acquisition of Palm. The latest and greatest webOS version should be released by the end of the year - it's just not clear on what devices it will ship.

Apple reveals iOS 4.1 for iPhone, promises 4.2 in November

Tonight at its annual music-centric event Apple dropped the bomb on a handful of iPhone news as well. Most of all, it's the iOS 4.1 update for iPhone. The Apple iPad will sit this one out but will join in on the fun with iOS 4.2 in November.
iOS 4.1 for iPhone is mainly a bug-fixing update but it introduces several new features as well. The bugs we're talking about here are well-known - issues with the proximity sensor and Bluetooth functionality of iPhone 4 plus the dismal performance on the iPhone 3G. Beside that iOS 4.1 brings about the much awaited Game Center functionality, some in-camera HDR magic, and HD video uploads (plus TV show rentals, if you care).

iOS 4.1 update is mainly a bugfix release but has a few new features up its sleeve
While iOS 4.1 will hit only the compatible models of the iPhone and iPod Touch, the next version of the iOS - 4.2 - will make sure the iPad gets up to speed as well. iOS 4.2 will be available to iPhone, iPod and iPad all at the same time - but you'll have to wait till November to get it. iPad users won't be happy.

iOS 4.2 update is coming to both iPhone and iPad in November
Besides showing the iPad some love, the iOS 4.2 update will bring along a new feature to the iPhone just as well. AirPlay will allow you to stream multimedia to and from your iDevice.
But back to iOS 4.1 update, the star of tonight's show. If you don't remember Game Center from the initial iOS 4 announcement, we'd be happy to remind you it's a way to add a social, multiplayer element to all compatible games in the AppStore. Besides the obvious benefit of displaying overall rankings and scoreboards, Game Center will also allow you to invite friends to a quick game or play in multiplayer mode with total strangers.

Game Center has been eagerly awaited since Day 1
The next new feature, HDR photography, is not exactly new to the iPhone. We've had apps do real HDRs on iPhone 4 before, but it's nice to have the HDR engine straight in the default camera interface. HDR on a cameraphone is not a new concept but it's only recently making its way to other smartphones. Anyway, we're sure you'll enjoy it. Just remember - use it, but don't abuse it.

In-camera HDR is sure lots of fun
Here's a nice HDR shot we made with the iPhone 4 using the dedicated, paid HDR Pro application.
HDR shot with iPhone 4
A HDR shot we took with the iPhone 4
iOS 4.1 update will be available next week. We really hope it gets jailbroken fast enough.
Apple also announced a new iPod Touch among other things this evening and though it bears the iPhone 4 specs, it's impressively thin. And it shoots HD video. We'll cover that and all the rest of announcements tomorrow in our more general tech blog.

The next generation of iPod Touch is impressively equipped and still cutting edge thin

O2 and Vodafone to sell the iPhone 4 in Germany

T-Mobile is losing its exclusivity for iPhone in Germany. As a result two more operators, O2 and Vodafone, will start selling Apple's phone as soon as the negotiations are finalized.
While all carriers are selling older iPhones models, the latest iPhone 4 is exclusive to T-Mobile DE. Currently, its price starts from 1 euro when purchased together with a 2-year contract.
T-Mobile Germany has already sold good 1.9 million iPhones across the country despite the delayed iPhone 4 shipments (some customers had to wait 9 weeks for the coveted device).
The latest rumor is T-Mobile is about to lose its exclusivity for Apple's toy in Germany in October, which will allow the other two companies to get in on the action. There is no word from either of the companies yet but according to the WSJ the negotiations are in an advanced stage.
It's not like we haven't seen this scenario: last year the same thing happened to O2 UK who lost its iPhone exclusivity in the UK weeks just before the holiday season and Vodafone and Orange were allowed to join the game.

Froyo-running, QWERTY-packing Samsung I5510 spotted at IFA

The Galaxy Tab was the star of the Samsung show at IFA, but look who else showed up at the party. The Samsung I5510 appeared on the Vodafone booth touting Android 2.2 Froyo and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
It hasn't been announced officially so it was a surprise appearance. The Samsung I5510 has a four row slide-out QWERTY keyboard - a first for European droids from Samsung. Samsung are unwilling to reveals more details about it, beside the fact it's going to be Vodafone-exclusive at launch.
Samsung I5510 Samsung I5510 Samsung I5510 Samsung I5510 Samsung I5510 Samsung I5510

Anyway, I5510 runs Android 2.2 Froyo and has 3G connectivity. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth apparently are also on the Samsung I5510 spec sheet as is a microSD card slot.
We'll have to wait until Samsung officially announces this potential new member of the Galaxy lineup, before we have all the specs. The Samsung I5510 is said to be targeting the 200 euro price point.

iOS 4.1 coming on September 8, makes the 3G run faster (video)

A slip up on the Apple UK site revealed the iOS 4.1 launch date - they’ve fixed it now, but the secret is out. The new version brings bug fixes, new features, but most importantly - fixes the iPhone 3G performance, which has been glacial up till now.
The iOS 4.1 update is expected next week, and the UK site gave us a specific date - September 8, Wednesday. The US site proved better at keeping its secrets and stuck with “coming soon”.

For iPhone 3G owners, the biggest gain from iOS 4.1 will be the much improved performance. Check out the video below, which “races” a 3G running iOS 4.0 against the same unit running 4.1. The UI becomes more responsive and beats v4.0 across the board with a pretty big advantage in some places.

Nokia N8 starts shipping Sep 30, E7 to be announced next week?

The long wait isn't over yet - new info says the Nokia N8 will start shipping in late September, at least for those who pre-ordered. In the mean time, the Nokia E7 popped up, reportedly going official as soon as next week.
The Nokia N8 has been on a handful of sites for pre-order, each site citing a different launch date. Some of those dates flew through with no N8 in sight, other dates are always a couple of weeks ahead.
Nokia N8

The end just might be in sight though - a Finnish site spoke to Nokia's Senior Communications Manager who said that Nokia N8 pre-orders will shipping September 30. He also said that the N8 will cost 499 euros - since we've seen different prices for different countries, that shipping date might be for Finland only.
Still, the Nokia World event is fast approaching (it's on September 14 and 15) - there Nokia is expected to unveil the Nokia E7. The E7 is a Symbian^3 phone with a slide out QWERTY and got leaked a few times, with speculation that it's the Nokia N9.
Nokia E7 Nokia E7 Nokia E7 Nokia E7
Nokia E7 photos
Well, it's not the N9, but the specs still seem quite impressive - a 4" touchscreen (probably nHD), 3G, Wi-Fi, 8MP camera with dual LED flash and an HDMI port. If these specs pan out, the Nokia E7 should sit somewhere between the Nokia C7 (which has a smaller screen and no QWERTY) and the Nokia N9 (which touts an aluminum body and MeeGo). The Nokia E7 specs are unconfirmed, but that should change next week.

LG showcases Optimus 7 DLNA prowess, stays mum on specs

Today LG officially introduced their first WP7-running handset Optimus 7. You would think that, being the first company to formally introduce a WP7 handset, the Koreans will have quite a lot to say about it, but obviously this is not the case. All LG gave us was a couple of photos of the device and a few words about its DLNA capabilities.
They even went as far as to remove the Windows logo from the phone. However the design and the naming leave no doubt that it’s the formerly known as LG Panther device we are looking at. The Optimus 7 will obviously also be able to stream 720p videos directly to your TV and that’s about all the info LG were willing to share.
LG Optimus 7 LG Optimus 7
LG Optimus 7
Luckily there were so many LG Optimus 7 leaks so far that we known pretty much everything there is to know about it. You can check out its specs page to see what this one will have to offer.
At any rate the Optimus 7 should be in the shops before the end of the year, so we will have an answer to the final question remaining – pricing.

LG adopts Tegra 2, dual-core smartphones on the way

LG announced it's preparing a new lineup of smartphones based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. Dual core 1GHz processor, low-power NVIDIA graphics and seamless fullHD playback will be the key features of the refreshed Optimus brand.
LG will present NVIDIA Tegra 2 based smartphones within the last quarter of this year. The first devices utilizing Tegra 2 will be from the Optimus brand.
NVIDIA Tegra 2 includes 1GHz dual-core processor and powerful but energy-efficient G-Force GPU. Tegra 2 will guarantee excellent browsing and gaming performance plus 1080p video playback.
There is no word on the OS yet, but we guess both Android and Windows Phone 7 are likely candidates.

Samsung presents Orion - a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU

Samsung unveiled the successor of their highly popular Hummingbird processor - Orion. The new platform is based on 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, packs a vastly better GPU and allows 1080p video encoding/decoding. Plus there is support for up to three displays.
The mobile scene just got on the next evolutionary step. Samsung Orion is the powerful successor of the popular Hummingbird CPU(used in Galaxy S/Galaxy Tab, Wave, iPhone 4/iPad). It packs a new 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 architecture, a 5 times more powerful graphic accelerator and HDMI 1.3a interface supporting two on-device and one external displays.
The new chip should allow way better gaming experience, 1080p video playing and recording at 30fps as well as, of course, the multiple display support.
Samsung Orion will become available to manufacturers partners in Q4 this year, while the mass-production cycle will start in the first half of 2011.

Sony Ericsson Yendo priced at 169 euro, to be called Yizo in the US

The full touch Walkman phone Sony Ericsson W150i Yendo was announced back in June and now it's almost ready to start selling. For 169 euro. Meanwhile, the device paid the FCC a short visit and as it turns out, it will be called Yizo in the US.
The Yendo which first showed up a few months back is getting ready to hit the stores. We spotted it on the Phone House Spain website and right under its image and name there was its price. This just about solves one of the final remaining mysteries about the Yendo. The device is priced at 169 euro, SIM-free.
Along with the photos of the Yendo exterior and internals the FCC website also holds the Sony Ericsson W150a manual. And according to it, the American version of the W150i Yendo will be called Sony Ericsson W150a Yizo.
Just like the Yendo, the Yizo will come with a 2.6 capacitive touchscreen of QVGA resolution and Walkman logos all over its body. On the back there will be a 2-megapixel fixed-focus snapper and on the top - a 3.5mm audio jack.
As for the W150 user interface, it will be quite reminiscent of the one found in the Android-running Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro. However, unlike those two, the music-centric Yizo will lack smartphone capabilities.
There is no information on the Sony Ericsson Yizo launch date or price tag.

LG GD550 Pure review: Slide and go

Introduction

Big buttons and no questions asked. Believe it or not, that’s what some people still look for in a phone. The LG GD550 Pure is playing it safe – less tech inside means fewer things to go wrong. This is less a gadget for those who think old-school is cool and more for those who take old-school to mean safe and familiar.
Lg GD550 Lg GD550 Lg GD550 Lg GD550
The LG GD550 Pure is not many things but one. A good old-fashioned slider with the right measure of metal on the outside and a great keypad. It likes to keep it short and simple. Not too many fancy acronyms on the spec sheet and a user interface that prides itself on simplicity. We can’t even call it user friendly – foolproof is more like it.

Key features:

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, UMTS with 3.6 Mbps HSDPA
  • 2.4" 262K-color QVGA display
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera, D1 video recording @ 30fps
  • Standard microUSB port
  • Bluetooth (with A2DP)
  • Hot-swap microSD card slot (up to 16 GB)
  • FM radio
  • Excellent keypad
  • Office document viewer

Main disadvantages:

  • User interface is nice and simple, but perhaps too basic
  • No smart dialing
  • Poor image quality and video recording
  • Laggy image gallery
  • No sign of any social networking integration
  • Memory card slot under the battery cover
We usually like it when a company is trying to do things differently. And we don’t mind an occasional blast from the past. The 3G speeds and imaging aside, the LG GD550 Pure would’ve made perfect sense in 2006. In fact, this phone is easier to define by what it’s not than what it is.
The LG GD-lineup has all sorts of phones – from basic touchscreen (GD 510 Pop) through the cool Mini to the extravagant Crystal. These are all gadgets that the potential GD550 Pure user will never bother to look at. The GD550 Pure is a far cry too from the BL20 New Chocolate and the Pure is very much a low key version of LG’s sweetly-named handset.
Lg GD550 Lg GD550 Lg GD550 Lg GD550
LG GD550 Pure live photos
Uncomplicated, comfortable and grown-up, there isn’t much going on with the LG GD550. It’s happy just being a phone. To make it even easier on the user, LG have put a new interface in it and given the new setup a nice catchy name. Pure says it all really – slide up and you’re right inside the menu. Phones just don’t get any simpler than that to handle.
But we’ll get to that in due time. Now let’s see what the LG GD550 Pure is made of.

Smartphone market grew 55 percent, iOS declining by 2014

There are some good times ahead for smartphones, say market analysts from IDC. Smartphone market share is expected to grow by over 50% and oddly iOS will be declining in the future, with Android and Windows gaining ground.
IDC analysts actually had to increase their prediction of how much the smartphone market will grow this year by as much as 10%. That means they expect a healthy 269.6 million smartphones to ship by the end of the year, a huge improvement over the 173.5 million number from last year. That's a growth of 55.4%.
The overall phone market is growing faster than anticipated too - in 2010 the market should grow by 14.1% (1.5% higher than initial estimates). In the coming years, smartphone market will keep growing though at a slower pace - 24.5% in 2011 and only 13.6% in 2014.

Speaking of 2014, here are some interesting estimates IDC has prepared on the smartphone OS market share four years in the future. Symbian will keep the number 1 spot, though with smaller share. Android will snatch the number two spot and Windows will grow to just below 10%.
BlackBerry OS is expected to retain its current share (though it will slip to third place). Interestingly though iOS share will drop by 25% in the next four years. We'll have to wait and see if these predictions pan out - but if they do, the Redmond OS will nearly equal the Cupertino OS market share in 2014.

White HTC Desire and silver HTC Wildfire caught in the wild

HTC Desire is getting yet another paintjob. This time the Android smartphone is showing up dressed in white. In the meantime its younger bro, the HTC Wildfire, gets a silver color version.
Currently, the HTC Desire can be found wearing brown, black or silver outfits and, apparently, its white color version is just around the corner. Luckily, the white Desire posed for some photos while waiting for its market launch.
HTC HTC HTC HTC

To refresh your memory, the HTC Desire features a large 3.7" capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution and is powered by a zippy 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Also on board there are 576MB of RAM memory, a 5MP autofocus snapper as well as the Android 2.2 a.k.a. Froyo.

HTC Desire is getting a white paintjob and the HTC Wildfire - a silver one
As for the HTC Wildfire, its design is reminiscent of the Desire's but there is one major difference: the Wildfire is a lot smaller.
HTC HTC HTC HTC

The HTC Wildfire packs a tiny QVGA screen (measuring 3.2 inches), a slower 528MHz processor, less built-in RAM memory (384MB) and runs the Android 2.1 a.k.a. Eclair. Up until now there were black, brown, white and red Wildfires to see but today we get to take a look at the upcoming silver one.
Unfortunately, it is still not clear when the new color versions will become available.
